• Devotees broadly don’t know the character of the Ṣaḍ-gosvāmīs.
• Devotees don’t know the activities of the Ṣaḍ-gosvāmīs.
• Devotees aren’t aware of the qualities of the Ṣaḍ-gosvāmīs.
• Devotees aren’t aware of the results of the activities of the Ṣaḍ-gosvāmīs.
• Devotees don’t know how Rūpa Gosvāmī is the leader of the Caitanya Vaiṣṇavas.
• Devotees don’t know how following in the footsteps of the Ṣaḍ-gosvāmīs is essential for making advancement in Kṛṣṇa consciousness and serving Śrī Caitanya’s mission.
• Devotees aren’t aware of the lives of the Ṣaḍ-gosvāmīs.
• Devotees broadly don’t understand the significance of gopi-bhava and the reason Śrī Krsna accepted the mood of Śrīmatī  Rādhārāṇī in His appearance as Śrī Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
• Devotees don’t understand the mood of separation from Kṛṣṇa as the highest pinnacle of spiritual devotion and how it should be applied practically in daily devotional service.
• Devotees don’t understand that following in the footsteps of the Gosvāmīs is the means of success in the spiritual practice of the Caitanya Vaiṣṇava community.
• The devotees don’t know nor understand the instructions received by Sanātana and Rūpa Gosvāmīs from Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

This list needs some refinement but I’m pretty happy with the fundamentals described here. I’ll probably polish this for the rest of my life, especially when I begin teaching it. Not only that I envisage it being a short one lesson introduction as well as a full blown multi lesson course. Let’s see where it takes us.

I also got to fulfil a New Year’s resolution. Start the day with an hour of the most important task. Śrīla Prabhupāda rose early, very early, every day to write. He wanted us to study and write.

Śrīla Prabhupāda repeatedly instructed that all devotees should write, and that their writing should be faithful to guru, śāstra and previous ācāryas, meant for their own purification and for preaching Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

Who should write

• Prabhupāda said that all students and devotees should write something after reading Bhagavad-gītā, Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam and his other books, as an expression of their understanding and realization.
• He connected writing directly with preaching, stating that preaching means reading and writing; otherwise, what will one preach.

Purpose and mood of writing

• He taught that devotional writing is meant primarily to purify the writer’s heart, not to gain fame, credit or position, and it may or may not be published.
• Writing should be an extension of śravaṇam-kīrtanam-smaraṇam: hear from guru and śāstra, repeat that in writing, and thus constantly remember Kṛṣṇa and His teachings.

What to write about

• Prabhupāda specifically instructed that devotees should take topics from his purports in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam and other books (e.g. “Kṛṣṇa, the omnipotent,” “The original source of everything”) and present them in their own words, rather than prematurely writing on very confidential līlās like Rādhā–Kṛṣṇa pastimes for a general audience.

• He wanted regular articles for Back to Godhead and other preaching media, based on careful reading and assimilation of his books, showing how the devotee has understood and realized the philosophy.

How to write (discipline and method)

• Prabhupāda emphasized that genuine Vaiṣṇava writing must strictly follow the paramparā, not manufacture new meanings or speculate independently from the previous ācāryas and the standard śāstra.
• He also highlighted steady practice: even in the midst of many duties, devotees should keep the “practice of writing” alive by regularly composing something that glorifies Kṛṣṇa and articulates the philosophy.

Qualification and realization

• He encouraged devotees to write according to their actual level of realization, saying that by writing in this way one becomes more and more convinced and all doubts are destroyed.
• For deeper works and commentaries, he indicated that one must be truly realized and never deviate from the line of the previous ācāryas when explaining scripture.
